a bohemian and bright california home

I so love this home.  A bohemian mix of bright white spaces, natural materials, and layers upon layers of richly embroidered and dyed vintage textiles. Yes. The inspiring design is by Los Angeles based Amber Interiors, who in addition to offering both interior design and e-decor services, is also the source for much of the decor. Indigo and batik pillows, tensira throws and bedcovers, frazadas, kilims, kanthas, and suzanis… Gah! The shop in Woodland Hills is open by appointment, but happily this wonderfully curated collection is also available online.

Amber masterfully mixes the vintage and handmade with the modern style of Los Angeles. Her design philosophy, that “chic should be comfortable, inviting, and cool,” resonates in this home. The vintage textiles and textures add an approachability and ease to the space, while the saturated, bright hues pop against the clean white interior.

rustic luxe – a barn reborn

When childhood sweethearts and Francophiles, Paul and Charmaine Jack relocated from New Zealand to the medieval town of Uzes in southern France they took on more than just crossing continents. They chose to renovate a crumbling 250-year-old barn for their home. They transformed the structure into a masterpiece of rustic stone walls, sand-blasted beams, polished concrete, and exposed staircases – lending a laid-back luxe and an inviting modern, earthy interior.

a modern scandinavian bohemian home

I came across the home of Swedish interior designers Bill and Marie Olsson Nylander and had to share. Their home is a recently renovated 1970’s Swedish waterfront villa in Arild, Sweden. And it is a home, not a house. The pieces were chosen with such a definite and mesmerizing point of view that you cannot help but know who lives there, and, as far as I’m concerned, want to be them.
The mix of rough and raw vintage and ethnic elements with the clean lines of modernist pieces is inspiring and unexpected, while the splashes of color against the stark white interior demand attention. I love it.  The renovated space is fabulous, the furniture and decorative elements are perfect and provocative, and oh yeah, I’m a sucker for a spiral staircase.

the home in my head

A converted barn is used for this rustic dining room.A little while ago I spent some time daydreaming and designing the house which I will build when I am wildly successful (this is how I have spent countless hours.) Now being a creative person and in the industry of design, and after many years of visual merchandising and styling, I (for better or worse) can create highly elaborate visual worlds in my head – to a very minute detail. So off I went designing the glasshouse dining room which will have lemon trees and rosemary planted in it, the working pantry off the kitchen for prep work and for bread baking, the tiled stone courtyard that you drive into as you approach the house… all designed with an earthy, natural, rustic, modern elegance.
So with my new home in my head you can understand my surprise when, waiting to get my hair done, I opened the new issue of Elle Decor to find, well, kind of it.
