Bellocq rocks

As with many things, it was the packaging that drew me in. Happily though, in this case, what lies within is equally enticing. Behind the signature yellow, silver, and black tins is Bellocq, the award-winning tea company and purveyor of evocative artisan blends.

Following the success of their Kings Road, London shop, Bellocq packed up and moved to the states, opening their new tea atelier in Greenpoint, NY. (Brooklyn) The luxury tea company takes their inspiration from British and Parisian tea culture, infusing it with an adventurous and modern spirit. The story of Bellocq is one of passion and discovery. Bellocq’s founders, Heidi Johannsen Stewart, Michael Shannon and Scott Stewart joined creative forces with a desire to collaborate on a shared aesthetic vision that captures their appreciation of traditional artisan work and a love of fine tea.

And fine it is.

They offer black, green, white, oolong, herbal, single estate, pu-erh teas, as well as their award-winning signature blends. Notable among these are No. 45 White Wolf – a blend of white peony, cedar, juniper, and mint, No. 20 Kikuya – named after the first geisha, it is a blend of Japanese sencha and Bulgarian rose petals, No. 42 Little Dickens – a chocolate kissed children’s blend of South African rooibus, mint, and cinnamon, and finally, that which I will be starting with…

No. 22 Noble Savage

No. 22 Noble Savage – a handcrafted blend of Indian and Chinese black teas, juniper berries, Douglas fir tips, and wild blue cornflowers. Embodying the rugged soulfulness of the American Northwest this brew is earthy and reflective, producing an amber-hued liquor with a lingering, mellow finish. Yes please.

an understatement, to say the least

I have a thing for fonts. I love letters and words, and have certain words, the meaningful to me ones, affixed to spaces in my house. But they are so much more than this meaning, they are works of art. So much can be said in the curve of a line, in the use of positive and negative space, that the idea signified can become pretty ancillary to the signifier, or perhaps I should say the method of signifying. The font can say it (almost) all.
And it is this “saying it almost all” that drew me to the font of Benjamin Verlomme.
Besides the fact that it is beautiful – the lines are exquisite, the characters so pleasing – the font plays with this idea of understatement. It explores suggestion and seeks to find the line between something and nothing, defining the elements essential for identifying, representing, communicating… at what point does space acquire meaning?
It is not less is more, but less still is.
 “We need few words to express the essential.”

So we all grew up being told that you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. In the case of this gorgeous new series, Great Food, from Penguin books, due out next month, there are two things… First, based on how exceptional the cover looks, I don’t care what’s inside. Yes, I said it. Second, all you have to do is look at the titles and the authors and you can see how intriguing the insides are. If you have a penchant for anything remotely gustatory, then you want these.

This series is the latest from the extremely talented Coralie Bickford-Smith. A senior cover designer at Penguin Books in London, Coralie has created several series’ designs. Most extraordinary, and, it should be noted, I want every single one, are the Clothbound Series’ 1 and 2, making the classics even more collectible.
